FAQ's
What age does First Tee programming start?
Programming begins at age 7 and is available for youth through age 18. Programs are organized by age, and we welcome all abilities. There are some classes that start at age 5, but the life skills curriculum begins at age 7.
Does my child need to have golf experience?
No! First Tee welcomes participants of all skill levels. Whether your child has never picked up a golf club or already loves the game, our programs are designed to meet them where they are and help them grow.
Does my child need their own golf clubs?
No. Golf clubs are provided for participants to use during First Tee programming. If your child has their own clubs, they are welcome to bring them, but having a set of clubs is not required. Upon registration, you will be asked if clubs are needed. The lead coach will then contact the parent to gather more information to ensure the correct club size. Your child can then use the clubs for the duration of the class.
What should my child wear and bring to class?
Participants should wear proper golf apparel that is comfortable and appropriate for the weather, along with athletic shoes or golf shoes. We recommend bringing a water bottle, sunscreen, and any personal golf equipment your child prefers to use. On hot days, please make sure your child has plenty of water.
Where are First Tee programs held?
First Tee programming is offered at a variety of locations throughout the Upstate, including golf courses, practice facilities, and community partner locations. The location for your child’s specific program will be listed during registration.
What happens during a typical First Tee class?
Classes combine golf instruction, fun activities, and lessons that help participants develop important life skills. Participants will spend time learning and practicing golf skills while also learning how to apply the First Tee Key Commitments on and off the golf course.
What will my child learn at First Tee?
First Tee is about much more than learning how to play golf. Participants develop golf skills while learning the First Tee Key Commitments, which help them build skills such as perseverance, confidence, goal setting, and teamwork. Our goal is to help young people become better golfers and stronger individuals.
What happens if my child misses a class or if there is bad weather?
If your child misses a class, please let your coach or First Tee staff know when possible. Because our programs are structured as a progression, we are not always able to offer make up classes. In the event of severe weather or another cancellation, First Tee staff will communicate any schedule changes with parents.
How much does First Tee programming cost, and is financial assistance available?
Program fees vary depending on the program and session. First Tee is committed to making programming accessible to all youth, and financial assistance may be available to families who qualify. Please contact us if you have questions about financial assistance or registration fees.
