2025 Annual Appeal: Golf teaches. We build character

Annual Appeal Update

Why Golf?

It’s the Perfect Classroom without Walls

Golf is many things to many people: a networking tool, a professional career (just ask Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy), or simply a way to relax. But for all of us, the truth remains: golf is a mental game.

Because the game demands focus, perseverance, and emotional control, the golf course becomes the perfect, natural classroom for kids of all ages.

Our Mission: Life Skills First

At First Tee—Upstate South Carolina, we teach life skills through golf, not just golf itself. Our core values and key commitments move beyond theory; they are put into practice with every shot:

They learn about Growing Through Challenges through every bad lie, tough condition, and shot that doesn’t go as planned. Golf constantly tests them, and each obstacle becomes an opportunity to prove to themselves they can handle hard things—on the course and in life.

They understand Integrity by realizing the score only matters if every stroke, even the ugly one, is counted when no one else is watching.

They embrace Courtesy by caring for the environment—always fixing a ball mark or divot—to show respect for the game and others.

They learn about Using Good Judgment when they have to decide whether to take a risky shot over water or play it safe—weighing consequences, managing emotions, and making smart choices under pressure.

These aren’t abstract concepts taught in a textbook. They’re lived experiences that shape who our kids become, both on and off the course.

But the real mission of First Tee — Upstate South Carolina doesn’t end on the 18th green.

Beyond the Fairway

The goal of First Tee— Upstate South Carolina is to help participants carry the Nine Core Values and Key Commitments beyond the golf course.

When a parent picks up their child after practice and hears, “I learned about honesty and respect today,” we know our approach is working.

The real magic happens when those lessons show up beyond the course—in school hallways, at the dinner table, and throughout their lives.

We see the long-term impact in:

  • Improved academic responsibility
  • Stronger relationships with peers and adults
  • Increased confidence in college interviews
  • Greater readiness for future workplaces

These aren’t just golf lessons. They’re the building blocks for a lifetime of character.
